History of the Phrase “Rest in Peace”
The phrase Rest in Peace has been found on tombstones as far back as the 8th century and has been continued to be used by Christians through the ages.
Rest in Peace comes originally from the Latin “requiescat in pace”. “Pace” in Latin means “peace” which is a direct translation. “Requiescat” however, does not translate directly to mean “rest”. The Latin phrase gave reference to a prayer that was used to indicate a state of rest or sleep that the deceased was in. It can be translated as “May he/she begin to rest in peace”.
This prayer was used to ask a higher power to ensure that the soul of the deceased would receive peace, rest, and comfort in the afterlife. Today, the words Rest in Peace are often used to refer to the body of the deceased rather than the soul.
The acronym R.I.P. was used as far back as the early 1600s as an abbreviation for “requiescat in pace”. Later during that century, it became the accepted abbreviation for Rest in Peace.
Another similar Latin phrase “dormit in pace” was discovered in the catacombs of the first Christians. The phrase translates as “He sleeps in peace”.
Rest in Peace is now widely used in many Christian denominations. It is also used by people who are not religious and is accepted worldwide as an appropriate way of offering condolences.
Is “Rest in Peace” or R.I.P. a Respectable Condolence
When someone passes away, it is sometimes difficult to express your feelings. What is the best way to offer condolences without sounding insincere?
The words Rest in Peace can help out those who are at a loss for words. They can be used verbally, in writing, and on social media. Many funeral services incorporate the phrase, as it has a solemn tone that fits in with the sad occasion.
The phrase can be abbreviated when written and can be expressed as R.I.P. or even as RIP. When taking the time to write a message from the heart, it is more appropriate to write out the words in full. Social media content tends to be briefer, and R.I.P. is acceptable in shorter posts.
Rest in Peace is a respectable condolence. It is accepted and understood by most people. You do not have to be religious to use the phrase Rest in Peace. The words have a calming and comforting ambiance that conveys your feelings in an authentic way. People will understand that you are offering respect and well wishes to both the deceased and the bereaved.
What does the Bible Say About Rest in Peace?
Although the phrase Rest in Peace is used extensively in Christian funeral and memorial ceremonies, these exact three words are not expressed like this in the Bible.
There are, however, many biblical references to resting and peace after death in the Bible. Christ tells us that believers will pass on and rest in happiness and contentment with Him in Heaven. Those who do not believe will end up in Hell, a place where there is no rest and no peace for eternity.
The first reference to rest in the Bible comes from the Old Testament, Genesis 2:2-3. “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done”. This verse does not relate to resting after death but gives Man the guidance that rest is an important part of life.
In Daniel 12:13, an Angel speaks of Daniel’s death and says “You will rest”. Daniel had great Faith and the Bible tells us that after being thrown to the lions his Faith “stopped the mouths of lions”. Hebrews 11:33.
The prophet Isaiah understood the concept of resting in peace after death. Isaiah 57:2 “Those who walk uprightly enter into peace; they find rest as they lie in death”.
So although the saying Rest in Peace is not in the Bible, those who believe that Christ is their Savior can be assured that they will find rest and peace after death. Luke 23:43 “And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
Pope Benedict XVI stated that “All Christians believe that only God can determine whether a person belongs in heaven or in hell”
Protestants have been advised to stop using the phrase R.I.P. to deliver condolences after a person has died because it is un-Protestant, un-biblical and a superstition connected to the Catholic religion.
